On September 25, a local man died from lung injuries associated with vaping. Since then, two more deaths have been confirmed, bringing the total death toll to 12, as of midday on September 27, 2019.

What’s Causing the Outbreak?

The CDC initially classified the adverse effects of vaping as cases of severe lung disease, but the organization now refers to the ailments as severe lung injuries. This is a key distinction, as it traces patients’ lung issues to chemical exposure, instead of a viral or bacterial illness.

While the CDC is certain the lung injuries are caused by chemical exposure related to vaping, they have not yet identified the specific substance. Originally, most cases involved the use of THC, the active chemical in marijuana, but now the breakdown is as follows:

• 77% of patients used THC products
• 36% of patients exclusively used THC products
• 57% of patients used nicotine products
• 16% of patients exclusively used nicotine products

In most cases, the exposure happened about 30 days prior to the onset of symptoms.

What Are the Symptoms of E-Cigarette-Associated Lung Injury?

According to medical professionals, a common set of symptoms includes:

• Coughing
• Shortness of breath
• Fatigue
• Chest pains
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhea

The symptoms typically become worse over time and are similar to those of pneumonia.
